These phrases were selected for situations people regularly face in Germany: shops, restaurants, transport, housing, appointments, healthcare and social life. Learn the phrases you need first, then practise saying them aloud in complete situations.
FORMAL OR INFORMAL?
Sie is the formal “you.” Use it with strangers, officials, customers, medical staff and people you do not know well.
du is informal. Use it with friends, children and people who have invited you to use it.
PRONUNCIATION SYSTEM
- CAPITAL letters show the stressed syllable.
- AI sounds like “eye”; OY sounds like “boy.”
- UE = German ü: say “ee” with rounded lips.
- OE = German ö: say “eh” with rounded lips.
- KH represents German ch. The exact sound changes by word.
A NOTE ABOUT PRONUNCIATION
The English-friendly sound guides are approximations.

112 — ambulance and fire service for life-threatening emergencies; free and valid throughout the EU.
110 — police emergency number in Germany.
116117 — for urgent medical problems that are not life-threatening and cannot wait until your doctor’s practice reopens. The telephone service is available 24/7 but operates only in German.
It is intended for situations where:
medical practices are closed; treatment is needed promptly; the condition is not life-threatening.
