01 Understanding the Anmeldung

The Anmeldung is the official registration of your residential address with the local registration authority (Meldebehörde), often located in a Bürgerbüro or Bürgeramt.

1. Move in You can register only after you have actually moved into the address.

2. Register In general, register within two weeks of moving in.

3. Keep proof You normally receive a Meldebestätigung as proof of registration.

• The exact procedure and document list can vary by city or municipality.
• Many authorities require an appointment; some also offer online registration.
• A personal appointment is usually free of charge.
• Bring original identification documents unless your local authority states otherwise.

02 Required Documents

What must the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung contain?

• The address of the property
• The full name and address of the housing provider (Wohnungsgeber)
• The owner's name if the housing provider is not the owner
• The actual move-in date
• The names of all people moving in and required to register

Before you go

• Check the official website of your local Bürgeramt/Bürgerbüro.
• Confirm the office address, appointment time, and whether you need a printed form.
• Make sure the move-in date and spelling of every name are correct.
• Put your surname clearly on the letterbox so the official post can reach you.
