00 HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

Choose the section that matches your situation, practise the complete phrases aloud, and personalise them with your own details. Good small talk is not a memorised speech: it is a short exchange in which you react, ask one natural follow-up question, and share a little about yourself.

Small-talk habits vary by region, age, workplace, and relationship. Adapt the level of formality and the amount of personal detail to the situation.

01 STARTING A CONVERSATION

Use a simple greeting, introduce yourself when necessary, and connect your first question to the place or situation.

Connect the conversation to the children, the class, or an upcoming school activity. Many parent groups use du, but begin with Sie when you are unsure.

A specific, sincere compliment is usually more natural than a very strong or personal one.

You do not need to pretend that you understood. A short clarification request is professional, polite, and often keeps the conversation going.

15 ENDING A CONVERSATION POLITELY

A clear closing prevents the conversation from ending abruptly and leaves the door open for the next exchange.

16 SMALL-TALK DOS AND DON’TS

The best small talk is attentive, balanced, and appropriate to the relationship. Use these principles when you are unsure what to say.

GOOD HABITS Connect to the situation. Ask about the event, the neighbourhood, the school activity, the weekend, or something you are both experiencing. Balance questions and sharing. After one or two questions, add a short detail about yourself so the exchange feels mutual. Notice signals. Short answers, looking away, or returning to a task may mean the person needs to end the conversation. Stay positive but genuine. You do not need to be overly enthusiastic; a calm, friendly response is enough.

TOPICS TO HANDLE CAREFULLY Personal finances and salary. Avoid direct questions unless the relationship and context clearly make them appropriate. Health, religion, politics, and family plans. These can be sensitive and are not reliable first-conversation topics. Assumptions about identity or background. Let people choose what they want to share about nationality, family, work, or language. Negative comments about other people. Gossip may create an easy conversation in the moment but can damage trust.
